Welcome to Uppsala during the most magical time of the year during Uppsala Light festival, or as it is known in Swedish – Allt ljus på Uppsala! The colorful light festival illuminates the city’s famous landmarks and cozy streets with spectacular light installations. For families, the evening becomes even more exciting with plenty of play, adventure, and food experiences for small peckish bellies. Here’s our guide to an unforgettable evening for the whole family!
Start your evening at Uppsala Castle – A light show to remember!
Begin your outing at Uppsala Castle, where this year’s light festival offers an impressive installation that transforms the entire façade facing the courtyard into a piece of art. Let the children run around the castle grounds while you take in the magical atmosphere. Don’t miss stopping by Botanical Garden along the way to see the Globoscope installation, which enchants both young and old.
Fun and play at Pelle Svanslös Playground
Pelle Svanslös Playground, just a stone’s throw from Uppsala Castle, is a favorite for families. Let the children immerse themselves in the world of the beloved character, climbing, swinging, and running around while the adults take a chance to stretch their legs. The playground is also a perfect break before continuing to the next light installation which is just next to the playground.
Refuel for small and big appetites
After wandering around and admiring the light art, it might be time for a meal. Why not make a stop at Koh Phangan, a Thai restaurant with an exotic and playful atmosphere that both children and adults will love? The restaurant is decorated like an authentic Thai beach bar with colorful string lights, hammocks, and fun details, making the meal an experience in itself! But hold on – sometimes thunder rumbles, and sudden monsoon rains break out indoors, giving you an unforgettable experience in the middle of November’s chill.
Magical evening stroll along the Fyris River
Once everyone is full, it’s time for a walk around the corner to see the artwork Translucens – a spectacular light projection on a wall of water droplets! – an experience that fascinates both young and old. Follow the river towards Stadsträdgården, where you can end the evening by discovering more light installations and perhaps take a final break on one of the cozy benches while the children burn off the last of their energy in Stadsträdgården’s playground.
End with hot chocolate at Villa Anna
Before wrapping up the evening, why not warm up with something tasty? At Villa Anna, located near Odinslund and the magical firefly artwork Firefly, you can enjoy a warming cup of hot chocolate before heading home.
