A sense of community is rarely far away. It can begin right here – at a threshold, in an opening or with a simple gesture that says, “you are welcome”.
When you open The Door, you can see what is on the other side – but only if someone else is brave enough to open the door on their side at the same time.
A door can shut people out or invite them in. It marks a boundary, but it can also open the way to something new. What happens if you dare to open your door? What happens if someone else opens theirs?
The City of Helsingborg is behind The Door, which was developed in collaboration with Alexandra Instituttet in Copenhagen and Luxera AB. The installation was originally created for the Drömljus light festival in Helsingborg in 2018, initiated and commissioned by the City of Helsingborg.
Uppsalahem is Uppsala’s largest housing company, with more than 18,000 homes for around 30,000 Uppsala residents. Uppsalahem aims to create a sense of security not only within the walls of the home, but also between people. A sense of security can grow through encounters with neighbours, a simple hello, or the familiarity of seeing the same faces in the courtyard or stairwell. When people get to know one another, a place often becomes warmer, more open and less lonely.
Uppsalahem helps create homes where people not only live close to one another but also feel a sense of belonging. Because when a neighbourhood is shaped by a strong sense of community, it also becomes a safer place.
