What does it feel like to be far away — from a place, from another person, or from yourself? Far Away captures that feeling of distance, but also the moment when something begins to shift. The artwork consists of a series of points of light that seem to rest quietly until someone approaches. Then the light awakens, pulsing softly in response — as if it has sensed you. The technology remains invisible. What you encounter is a subtle interaction between light and presence. The installation is built on the idea of non-verbal communication — that belonging doesn’t always require words, only a step closer. It reminds us that sometimes it’s enough simply to be there, together, in the same space. The fact that Far Away lights up only when someone comes near makes it a kind of sensory organ within the city — a system of quiet signals that say: you are not alone. It carries a promise that even in times of change, we can find new closeness and new ways to feel safe.
Machines is a French art and design studio working at the crossroads of light art, interactive technology, and spatial design. Their work explores how we relate to our surroundings – not just through what we see, but through what we experience together with others. Using sensors and programmed light, they create installations that respond to the viewer’s presence – often in ways so subtle they’re barely noticeable. Far Away is a clear expression of that vision. The piece doesn’t shine to be seen – it shines because you’re approaching. A wordless conversation. A poetic gesture in the dark, where technology steps back – and human presence takes centre stage.
Bolander & Co embodies trust and reassurance – values that become especially visible in the light installation Far Away. The piece only lights up when someone approaches, serving as a reminder that true security doesn’t arise from a distance, but in the connection between people.
